The Week Before the New Year

There’s something about the week before the New Year that is …. well… like Limbo!  A land where we all may work, clean our parents houses after the big family Christmas party (no? this one is just me?) and  start looking at our presents while the thought of “What is next year going to be like?

I’ve already started laying the groundwork for my New Year’s Resolution and it’s one that you have heard many, many times already this year, but that I think will be exciting to pursue whole-heartedly in 2012:

I’m going to gets my stuff together.

ME ME ME ME ME!!!!  Because it’s high time I gots my stuff together and that’s what I really want. Because I realized that I’m a mess. A big mess. An awesome mess.  And that by constantly putting everyone else’s needs or what I perceive to need, I am miserable. And when I’m miserable, I make other people, people I care about worry and sad and irritated. I don’t want to do that to the people I care about. And I don’t want to be a hot mess anymore. So this year, I am going to take care of myself-Really take care of myself and let the awesome person that am I and share with you, O’Bloggy Friends of Awesomeness, come out and be a part of my everyday life.

I’ve been extra-inspired by the way each of you have done something major in each of your own lives this year and come out better for it. Whether it be coordinating Pirate festivities and kicking ass, pursuing dreams of other careers, taking long and sometimes perilous to your poor feet journeys, taking that long dreamed of road trip, or simply keeping an awesome sense of humor when it seems like everything is just well… poop… Y’all have inspired me to go beyond what I’m “Supposed to” do to accomplish some of my own dreams. and I think THIS is the year I make some major achievements.

Some of the things I hope to carry out

1. Lose weight- Do you know I still have some 140 odd days left in my challenge? Totally do. How far will I go? I now have a buddy (my brother) to lose weight with so it’s going to be PRETTY AWESOME since he and I are so damned alike at times.

2. Audition for a musical at the local theatre. Because I can sing and dance and make you CRY… and maybe laugh a little too.

3. Draw an ABC book and get it published.

4. Transfer to Career Services at the school so that I can help kids plan for their future and be totally awesome without all the nasty stressy parts of my current job.

5. Buy a new car. I’m still driving my dad’s car. I’ve never owned my own car. Time to get a NEW car! or a slightly used but still totally new to me and more affordable care

6. Go on vacation. Like AWAY. Somewhere I’ve never been. Just for kicks.Like Canada!

What about you? Are you cooking up some awesome resolutions or are you saying “Screw THAT! I’m awesome just the way I am! Are you trying to say I’m less than awesome, because I’m perfect just the way I am, sister!”

Either way, I’d love to hear what you’re thinking.

  1. I’ve never been a big fan of resolutions, as I find that I can’t keep them and end up being frustrated by my failures. I do have a few things I want to work on (running, eating better), so I’m going to focus this year on “tweaking” my life a bit instead of making major resolutions.

  2. Solitary Diner- I’ve totally been there. But then I realized that I can make a list of goals with my resolution, and who doesn’t love lists? I think that your tweaking strategy sounds great! But then again, it’s not even up to me, eh? :D have a great new year!

  3. This made me think about something my therapist told me when I was in counseling (pardon me if I’ve said it before): Keep your own side of the street clean.

I.e. Don’t worry about helping other people fix their “stuff” – focus on your own. I cannot tell you how many times I have to remind myself of this. And it’s true – taking care of your own stuff makes EVERYTHING better. Pulling yourself out of misery and into happiness will only breed more happiness in your life.

I’m so jealous you can sing and perform! What an amazing talent to have (on top of your killer drawing abilities). I can’t wait to hear what show you end up in! :)

    • Hey, who said I was GOOD at it? I hope I’m good at it. we’ll see.

I like this saying about keeping my own side of the street clean. I am going to keep this image in my mind as 2012 approaches

  4. Love the list! Focusing on yourself is definitely the way to go. You are not a mess — just work in progress like everybody else! A youtube of your performance is in order? :-)

    • You are in my not-so-humble opinion a MASTER of list making. I hope one day my lists are as amazing as yours.

And thank you for your kind words! One day, I may share a you tube. Once I learn how to do that. and get guts for singing in front of a camera :)

      • We shall both be Master of List Accomplishing! :-) Yours is amazing — very concrete and concise! Come to Portland!!

If Rebecca Black can do it (I am sure yours will be better), you can too!

      • Ugh, I can’t believe the video shows up! It’s HUGE! I just wanted it to be a link. Anyway, feel free to delete it! Sorry ;-)

  5. H is for Homer-Dog. G is for Geek Hiker. S is for Sky Blue State Of Mind (Or Solitary Diner). M is for Miss McCracken (or Mel Heth) The ABC book should be awesome … or very strange ;-)

No resolutions for me. I’ve learned when I make them I always end up confessing that I’ve already broken them.

Take care of yourself first and everyone else will be taken care of.

    • A bloggy based book would be fun, even if we’re the only ones who get it. And it’s never too early or late to resolve something. I usually break my resolutions then resolve that THIS TIME is THE time.

  8. I think you have a great list of resolutions, and I wish you luck with them. So many! Good luck with the job change; I hope that works out. The car and vacation – that’s just money. Close your eyes and just do it! I’m not sure why you’re picking Canada, of all places, but there are some gorgeous places in Canada. Go to Banff!

Your first three resolutions – if I were going to make resolutions, those would probably be on my list. I wish I knew how to lose weight, or even just commit to a more regular exercise schedule. The musical will probably wait, since I have other projects I’m working on, at least for the first half of the year. Publishing a book is one of them – a long shot, but a great project to work on.
